A lot of NFL analysts believe that Von Miller and the Denver Broncos will reach a deal before Friday’s deadline. In fact, Jason La Canfora put the odds at 90 to 95 percent.
Jason Cole, however, won’t go that far.
“I’m probably 70/30 that yes he gets it done,” the Bleacher Report NFL writer said on CBS Sports Radio’s Ferrall on the Bench. “This thing could go the wrong direction, but he’s been offered a lot of money so far. The question really comes down to can you really walk way from a fair deal and say, ‘I’m not going to play football for a year’? I think at the end of the day, that’s a really hard thing for a football player to do. It’s easy to talk about when you’re angry and upset with negotiating tactics and think that you should be getting $75 million guaranteed rather than $66 or $68 million guaranteed. But come Friday, he’s going to have to sit there and say, ‘I’m unwilling to play football for a year’ and walk away from $60-something (million) guaranteed. That’s an extraordinarily difficult thing to do.”
Miller’s franchise tag is worth $14.1 million, but he wants roughly $70 million guaranteed. Whether he gets that – or anywhere close to it – remains to be seen.
Looking elsewhere around the league, Brent Grimes may want to ask his wife, Miko, to get rid of Twitter. Grimes was cut by the Dolphins in March after refusing to restructure his contract but signed a two-year, $16.5 million deal with Tampa Bay just days later.
Well, Miko used anti-Semitic language to blast Miami brass on Monday – even though Malcolm Glazer, who owns the Bucs, is Jewish.
“It’s very bizarre and it’s very weird,” Cole said. “It’s not even like just tell her to shut up. It’s like, we’re a partnership here together. You’re supposed to have my back and protect my authority to have a job, and she doesn’t get that. She’s cutting years off of his career and taking money out of his pocket. This is a guy who should be making $8 million a year. He’s not. She really hurt him in this one. And let’s face facts. Tampa was one of the last few places that he could really end up. She wants to talk all this trash about how, ‘Oh, all these teams were interested.’ Yeah, they were interested – at the minimum. They weren’t going to pay him any money. Tampa paid him a little bit of money because their defensive coordinator is Mike Smith. Mike Smith was Brent Grimes’ coach in Atlanta. So he’s vouching for Brent Grimes. Mike Smith has put himself out there a little bit for Brent Grimes because he likes the kid. But if you continue to have a wife being a disaster like this and becoming a spectacle and making anti-Semitic remarks about a team that’s owned by a conservative Jewish family, let’s see how long you stick.”
