You may know Ty Pennington as the former host of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” but friends and family know him as a diehard Atlanta sports fan. That’s because he grew up in Atlanta – first in the city and then in the suburbs.
He’s as excited as he is nervous heading into Super Bowl LI this Sunday.
“You know what it’s like with Atlanta. You’re excited, but then you’re like, ‘Oh, God, what’s going to happen?’” Pennington said on CBS Sports Radio’s Ferrall on the Bench. “But this year has been incredible just to see the amount of points that are just blowing up – and it’s not like it’s going to Julio every time. (Matt Ryan is getting the ball to everyone), so it’s pretty impressive, not to mention what’s happening with Freeman and Coleman, the fact that they’re just dominating. It’s just incredible to see. But they’re also going against the toughest team in the world. If anyone can do it, it would be these guys. I’m super stoked and pumped.”
That “toughest team in the world,” of course, is the New England Patriots, who are playing in their seventh Super Bowl of the Brady/Belichick era.
The Falcons, meanwhile, have won six straight games and have the best offense in football. Still, they’ve never won the Super Bowl, and Atlanta teams have a history of being good enough to get to the championship but not good enough to win it.
Pennington believes this team is different.
“Everyone is expecting them to fail, I think, and that’s exactly why they’re going to do well,” he said. “It’s going to be tough, but wouldn’t it be nice to (beat the Patriots)? It’s Belichick. After what happened to Pittsburgh last week, I was like, ‘Oh, my God, what have we gotten ourselves into?’ But I don’t know, man. I don’t know. There’s something about this team that could do some surprising. There’s not another team that’s put up those kind of points. It’s all really about our D, if our D can cause some ruckus and really make some incredible plays to pressure the hell out of Tom, then we’ve got something that can work. I believe. I will absolutely go insane if they win. It’s just never happened, so it’s hard to believe. But it’s like climbing Everest. You have to get to the top and then you have to beat the top. But let’s just hope those guys are battered up a little bit from getting where they are.”
